I HAVE A CD30 VOLVO MD7A--HEAT EXCHANGER PUMP IS LOCATED SO IT TAKES A VERY SMALL PERSON TO GET BEHIND THE ENGINE TO CHANGE THE IMPELLER. I'M ASKING IF THERE IS A PUMP OUT THERE TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL THAT USES A BRASS IMPELLER RATHER THAN NEOPREME TO PREVENT FREQUENT FAILURES AND IMPOSSIBLE CHANGES AT SEA.

You pose a good question. I resolved the access problem long ago by constructing a hatch in the cockpit sole but that obviously is not the answer for everyone. I always told myself one day I might try and use a centrifugal pump rather than a impeller pump such as a car uses for it's cooling system. I haven't given it a lot of thought but in casual thinking about it I don't see why it couldn't work.
It would be interesting to here if someone has experimented with a centrifugal pump in that application and what the results were. Anyone out there try it?
Re: COOLING PUMP
How often does this pump fail? I have the same engine with 700 hrs on the same impeller-no failures. I carry a spare just incase and will probably replace it next year. If you are experiencing a high rate of failures maybe the pump housing is damaged. Check the bronze cam.NORMAN AHLHEIM wrote: I HAVE A CD30 VOLVO MD7A--HEAT EXCHANGER PUMP IS LOCATED SO IT TAKES A VERY SMALL PERSON TO GET BEHIND THE ENGINE TO CHANGE THE IMPELLER.
