Wanted: Barlow #18 Winch Drum, Old Signet Instruments

Post by Greg Duckworth »

I am slowly getting all the parts on our recently acquired CD27 working again. However, a few are proving troublesome. The drum is frozen to the crank hub on one of the Barlow #18 two-speed winches.
1) does anyone have any suggestions for removal?
2) does anyone have a drum and hub or entire winch they would like to sell?

I have been able to get the old Signet (vintage 1979 or so) instruments going for the most part. However, the Signet MK-70 (P/N 7000) Depth Sounder is still not quite right.
1) I am interested in buying a (potentially functional) unit if someone still has it around.
2) What has been your experience with re-use (with new electronics) or replacement of the transducer? My transducer appears to send the signals through the hull (no penetrator). Any recommendations for removal- what is the procedure- how is it bonded and coupled? Any comments on successful replacement without putting in a through-hull?

thanks,
Greg Duckworth

I installed a Standard Horizon unit several years ago and found that the existing transducer worked just fine with it. Try changing the meter only.

Greg,
I don't know if this applies to your situation but, I just got a new case put on my Signet 1000 Depth, Speed, Log, multifunction instrument by the Signet repair service. It is an old model (my boat is a 1983) and the face was falling apart from the sun, but it worked great and it fits perfectly in my binnacle, so I wanted to preserve it if possible. They charged less than $200, recalibrated it, and it looks brand new. It may be possible they can fix your instruments too.

Greg, I have a 1974 Cape Dory 28, hull 10. I'm not sure what brand my winches are, I thought they were old Lewmar Bakelight winches. Anyway, there are two just like mine at a Marine Consignment Shop in Wickford, RI. Let me know if you need any more information. I need an additional winch handle, you know where I can get one? Thanks. Jeff Howlett
