Anchor Recs???

Post by Sean U »

Can anyone recommend an appropriate weight and type of anchor for a Typhoon Weekender? I need something that I can count on holding Epiphany for a night or two, but not as a mooring. I sail mainly on Narragansett Bay.

As always, thank you in advance for your help.

Sean, if you're going to leave the boat unattended I'd recommend a 20-pound CQR with 20 feet of quarter-inch chain, then enough 3/8-inch three-strand nylon to give you a minimum scope of 4 to 1, preferably 7 to 1 if you have swinging room. Better still, an all-chain rode, but it will be a heavy weight for a Typhoon to carry.

If you're planning on staying on board overnight, a 15-pound CQR will do you nicely. They're not cheap anchors but they are a favorite among world cruisers because they're extremely strong (warranted for life), will reset themselves easily, and will hold firmly most of the time in most bottoms. They also stow nicely in a bow roller.

I agree with John V.

The CQR is a great anchor, but a bit pricey. There is a used 20# CQR for sale in Danvers MA at Marine Exchange. They are asking $160.
