Ground plate

Post by Chris N. »

Were CD25's (mine is a 1980 or 82 -can't remember) fitted with a mast ground strap& plate from the factory, or is this something I should add? I don't think I ever looked to see if she was fitted with one, and I am trying to gather up everything I need for the impending lauch. Where would a ground plate typically be located below the waterline?
TIA,
Chris

Chris,

I can't say for sure that CD25s had a ground plate, but there is every reason to believe the 25Ds especially had them. They are usually on the side of the keel on the starboard side of the boat and are about three (3) inches high by eight (8) or nine (9) inches long and about one (1) inch thick. The outer surface is frequently painted with bottom paint (which isn't the best idea for optimal grounding capabilities). They are made from a group of bronze balls which are fused together so as to provide a very large surface area for water contact. This gives a very high surface area in a small space.

Hope you can find it on your boat, but if not they are available from BOAT/US or West Marine.

Good Luck,

I too have found that my CD 25 is only grounded to the battery. I just purchased the boat in November. I was planning on attaching a ground to the keel bolt but in trying to snake a wire I found it to be a long dificult run and feel that if she has survived 20 years this way it may not be a problem. Now I just have to avoid lightning!
