Diesel Maintenance Courses - Beaufort, NC

Post by Ken Coit »

John Nuttal and others:

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is offering diesel maintenance courses on the following dates:

April 28 - May 24-25* / October 27 / November 15-16*

I do not know the content nor the difference between the one and two-day sessions, but I will be there sometime in the next week and I will inquire. There seems to be no email contact listed on the web site, but maybe I can dredge one up.

Ken,

John Deaton of Deaton Yacht Service here in Oriental puts on a day- long workshop covering all aspects of diesel engines. It gets good reviews from all who attend and it's not expensive. Don't know details but you can certainly call them and find out.

Andy,

Are you back or just lurking from somewhere out there?

Thanks for the info on John Deaton. It was John Nuttall that was looking for a course. I guess he isn't busy enough.

Back or not, it is good to hear from you. The NC fleet has a couple of cruising events planned, one for Adams Creek and another for Ocracoke. Maybe they are posted, maybe they will be.

Here's more on the Diesel Maintenance Course at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. This is the entire description:

"The diesel engine is one of the safest and most reliable forms of marine mechanical propulsion available. Learning the basics about care and freding can make them even more so. This class is designed to take the fear out of changing filters, bleeding air out of the system, adjusting the valves, and reading the exhaust for signs of trouble before ou experience a meltdown. When you've completed the course you'll probably know what the mechanic is talking about on those more infrequent moments when you actually need one."

Class fee: $55.00 ($50.00 for Friends of the Museum)

In addition, I learned that the course is one day or two evenings and taught by a local person. The instructor's name was not known and has not yet been revealed. The one-day course runs 9 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.; or you can do it in two consecutive evenings from 6 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. Upcoming dates are: April 28; May 24-25; October 27; and November 15-16.

Apparently the courses are taught in the watercraft center, so you can rub your elbow on some real wooden boats too!

Hope to see you there!
