How do I get rid of diesel odour?

Does anyone know of a solution for eliminating or reducing the odour of diesel on a boat?(outside of the engine compartment of course)

Have you figured out exactly what's holding onto the smell? Is there a leak in the fuel line somewhere? Is it the cushions? Is it coming from the bilge?

If there's a fuel leak, you'll have to find it and take care of the leak. Then give the boat a good cleaning and airing out. If you've got one of those big square window fans (one larger than the hatch openings, you can open all of the port and hatches and lay the fan over an open hatch and turn it on so that it exhausts air from the boat.

If the cushions have soaked up the fumes, they'll need to be cleaned. And you can use a product like Fabreeze to freshen them up.

If there are odors eminating from the bilge, again, you'll need to give the bildge a good scrubbing and provide lots of ventilation.

Hope this helps.

If you already know where the diesel fuel is leaking, or are in the process of cleaning up the mess, use white vinegar as your final wipe down. A friend of mine carries a gallon of the stuff on his Catalina 30, and when he had to take his fuel tank apart to get the sludge out, he made a real mess!

You would not have known that he had diesel everywhere an hour later after clean up!

Hope this helps.

Good idea Ken. I've used vinegar and I've also used club soda. Club soda is also good if you spill something on a cushion or to remove pet stains.

Anybody else have any helpful hints from Heloise?

Mr. Matheson;
From your post it sounds like you are Canadian, not you are? My fathers name is Ian,his fathers name was Angus, and the family came from the Outter Hebbreties (sp?), sorry American public schools. Any relation? If so, what a small world. Ian is not a sailor, he kept Cleveland safe for Democracy during the Korean conflict in the USCG. I keep telling him my love of sailing is genetically implanted on my DNA. He ain't buying it... but Ian...check out Psalms 107:24. See you can sail on Sundays... If no relation, oh well.

Keith,
Before sailing on a Sunday, for context, read vs.23-31. Attitude is everything! Also look at www.gatheringoftheclans.com and read about the Highland Clearances, to see why our families likely came to America.

Two years ago i purchased a couple of ozone generators from Quantum electronics for my CD33PY, I had no diesel smell but have a real problem with mildew even in small amounts, these things really ,really work and yes I have spilled some diesel when changing filters even though I would clean it up it would still be there until I threw the switch on the ozone gen.My entire bilge smells like a fresh rainstorm and there are NO head,diesel,mildew or other odors and I have twin diesels and a gen-set. Pricey,yes available from West,but worth it!
