Cape dory 30

Post by mike amoruso »

I just sold my Catalina 27 today, I am going to look at the only Cape Dory in So. Calif. The boat is a 1984 Cape Dory 30. Can someone tell me some of the characteristics of this model. The boat is cutter rigged with a wheel, would prefere a tiller, it has a volve desil 13hp, is this enough power for a 10,000 lb boat. I would like to use this boat to sail ti HI. in 5 years can a cape dory this size make the trip

Thanks

Mike

Mike, Surely you mean the only Cape Dory "for sale" in Southern California. There are Cape Dory's all over Southren California as you'll see from a browse through the registry. I'm leaving for Hawaii in my CD 31 in May. I'm in Channel Islands Marina at the moment fitting out. There's also a 30 on my dock, so there are two CDs in SoCal right there. Be patient with the wheel it will grow on you. In my view CDs are a little underpowered, but they were meant to sail -- certainly adequate unless you plan to motor a lot. Characteristics? Stoutly built, sea kindly, track well, dry -- but surely you know that or why would you be considering a Cape Dory?

Owned a CD30K for 5years.The engine is well matched to the boat. The Edson worm gear wheel is ideal. The boat can sail anywhere. The question for all of us, is , can you handle it?

The short answer is yes...Dayspring, a 1979 CD30 is in New Zealand having sailed the Pacific. She has the Edson worm steering with the wheel slanted aft. The locals like to take the " mickey " but having just installed a stern seat in the pushpit railing, we wouldnt swap the setup for anything. These are safe, strong, well balanced yachts.
Dayspring has a Volvo 2002 engine, 20hp, with a V drivegearbox and 3 bladed prop. It is adequate. These are sailors yachts tho....

Our Cape Dory 30 Ketch had the Volvo 13HP diesel when we bought her. We found it barely adequate against heavy winds & seas, so we replaced it with a Westerbeke 23HP. HAPPY now. As the others have said, the CD is a SAILING vessel. Even though we spend as much time offshore as we can, sailing on the east coast of Florida often involves alot of time on the Intracoastal Waterway. That's where we found the 13 HP inadequate - there are just some areas that are too narrow & hazardous to sail in. You'll get used to the wheel, after you get over "tiller-itis" (the urge to turn the wheel in the opposite direction from where you want to go). Remember that the direction you turn the wheel is the direction you'll go & you'll be ok. If you are used to a tiller, the wheel is a little weird at first. You can go anywhere in this boat as long as YOU are ready. Know your limitations & give yourself time to know your boat.

I sail a CD-30K from April through November in Lake Eire. It is not the Pacific, but there is plenty of good sailing. I spend frequent weekends sailing solo on this boat, without self stearing, and I can say with confidence that this is a well balanced, comfortable, safe boat. It sails itself quite well (too the wind) and it seems the stronger the wind, the more reliable the helm. Off the wind is a different story, but still a joy to sail. The 13 hp Volvo is good for harbor work, and that occasional afternoon when the wind dies, but I also have experienced powering into strong head winds, and it is not designed for this. Power on a flat calm at 5 knots at about 1500 RPM is just about right. (do that all day) When the wind is up, sail this boat, and don't be afraid to carry a little more sail than you may be comfortable with. I reef my main in favor of dropping my 150 unless it is taking on too much water, or I fear that I will be unable to muscle it down as the wind increases. I have experienced gale coditions, club footed jib and mizen only, and the boat holds a very steady course close to the wind, and I watch below through the ports, what a great ride.

This boat was designed and built to take care of her skipper. I feel that every time I take her out. Enjoy!
