CD30 MKII

Post by Ed Haley »

I'm in the market for a CD30 MKII. I've read a limited amount on these Clive Dent designed Cape Dorys and was wondering how they sailed. One or two of the readers of this board may actually have one or know about how they behave when going to wind or sail downwind. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

I purchased "Rapport" a CD30MKII hull number 30 which I believe is the last one built in 1990. She sails very well and fast. I reef the genny at 15 knots of wind since shes a bit tender, considering her displacement. I have done very little cruising with her and even less heavy weather sailing. Overall it is the best boats I have owned and sailed. There is a lot of gel coat crazing on and around the dog house. Some deep crazing near the starboard winch and toe rail. One note of caution is the engine wiring harness. It shorted out prior to the boat being hauled last fall. We believe due to the gear shit lever making repetitive contact with the harness near the tranmission housing. It did not catch fire but destroyed the coating on the wires. I was lucky until I got the bill approx. $ 800.00 to repalce it. Overall I think the CD30MKII is a great investment in a blue water sailboat. Watch for hull blisters and depending on equipment and age expect to pay in the high 50's to low 60's.
