transport service on Long Island?? CD-33

Post by Brian W. »

We're in the very early stages of repowering our CD-33 (to a Yanmar 3GM from the original Volvo). The boats on the north shore of Long Island (huntington) and the place that's doing the repowering is about a half hour drive away in Port Washington. The tricky part is that the shop's shed opening is only 11.5 ft high. The 33 apparently is 10 ft. from keel to cabin top (bow pulpit MAY have to come off). For this reason, a hydrollic trailer that would allow for a very low ground clearence would be required. Can anyone in the area recomend a transport company with the appropriate trailer??

Thanks,

Why not ship the engine to the boat. The only extra labor cost should be the time it takes enroute and back for the installer. I watched a Frenchman in the Belhaven Shipyard remove his engine using the boom on his sailboat and it was a lot bigger than a 33. He did it alone.

Bob,

Unfortunately, they've described this repowering as "a bit challenging," and it will take some time. The old engine is out, but as the bed needs to be refabed to accomodate the Yanamr, and cabinatry work is being called for to allow for acccess, the project will likely take some weeks. The person doing the work stated he'd have to shut his whole shop down to travel back and forth (30-40 minutes each way) for each step of the project. While it would be more convenient for him to come to the boat, his argument is not without merit.

Just hoping to get this project underway before the 'season' starts up.

Brian

I live on LI and have our CD33 hauled each year between Mt. Sinai Harbor and Center Moriches. I am now using Fleets Cove Boat Haulers. They are a family business and both Marty and Karen are remarkably friendly and competent. I believe their yard is in Bayshore so its probably closer to you than they are to me.

They do have a hydraulic trailer and hauled our CD33 and positioned it in a difficult spot in the backyard with ease.

If you are interested, they can be reached at 631-277-5757.
