CD 27 vs. Sea Sprite 27

Post by Bob Petrow »

Has anyone compared a CD27 to a Sea Sprite 27 before purchasing their sailboat? I'm interested to learn the differences in terms of quality of construction, sailing characteristics and anything else you may be able to share. Thanks.

Luders did a nice job of designing the SS27. I prefer the layout of the SS over the CD27. It is more roomly etc. But I like the deck to hull joint better on the CD. The hardware on the CD (depending on the year) is hard to beat. Having owned boats from both builders (Ryder and CD) it is hard to compare the two. Both my boats had some problems. My SS never had blisters above the waterline but it did have some initial problems above the waterline. My CD had blisters below the waterline. The CD gelcoat (I believe) is more prone to stress cracks. There were a number of SS boats which had deck to hull leakage (when heeled). The SS27 was also sold as a 28, it is about a 27' 11" boat as I recall. Some of the SS27 hulls were built with an Airex core which I liked.

I believe that your best guide in your decision is to compare the present condition of each of the boats which are available. Their designs are too close to each other, both boats coming from good builders.
