I would like to build a Whisker Pole for my 87 CD30C.
I am sailing with my original Yankee only.
How long does it need to be?
If I want to use it with my Yankee only, do I need a pole that can change its length?
Thanks

Whisker Pole Question

Re: Whisker Pole Question
We'd be glad for similar advice for a CD 31. How long should the whisker pole be for the yankee? For a 150% genny (which we don't have yet)? For an asymmetrical spinnaker (we've got one of those)?
Thanks!

Re: Whisker Pole Question
i've had two poles - the first was a medium weight one that extended about 12 feet, it bent in half while poling out the yankee jib - the current pole is a heavy weight one, the next to biggest sold by west marine - it extends to about 15 feet and is very sturdy but heavy and therefore difficult to manage solo - i use the pole on the yankee and with a cruising spinnaker - the original cast aluminum fitting on the mast has also been broken off once and i replaced it with a stainless track and sliding fitting - the forces on the pole are enormous and i'd recommend the heaviest you can handle

additional info on poles
jacob, david
i looked up info on my pole - it is a button-lock model with tubes
2 1/2 inch and 3 inch - west's current catalogue doesn't have it and i
believe the line control poles are much easier to adjust - my original pole had two tubes, the biggest was 2 inch, and it was twist control -
if you are making your own, i think 2 1/2 inch is a reasonable minimum
size - good luck

source for tubular aluminum
A good source for tubular aluminum, sold BY THE FOOT: Airparts, 1-800-800-3227, Kansas City, Kansas. They have a price list on the web site. Very nice people to work with. This past Fall, I made a spinn pole for our CD28.
