How do I Renew Aluminum Fittings?

Post by Bill Goldsmith »

Hi Folks!

I just unstepped the mast on Second Chance for the first time since I purchased her in '98. The mast itself looks almost new (for some reason a new mast and standing rigging was installed in '97) but the mast step, gooseneck, winch pads, spreader bracket and mast light fitting are all dull; the winch pads and mast step even have some surface chalking.

What is recommended to bring these fittings back? Is there a type of polish recommended for aluminum? Once clean, what is recommended for long term protective and preventive maintenance (mast & boom as well)?

Thanks

Bill,
When I bought my 1980 CD27 this year we unstepped the mast for shipping. The surveyor also noticed some "chalking" around the mast step and some other fittings. This amounts to some corrosion according to him. There are many products you can use to get rid of the corrosion. Then the surveyor recommended painting those newly cleaned up areas with zinc chromate paint to stop any further corrosion. Inside the mast step thats all I did since it doesn't show.Where it does show you can probably use zinc chromate as a primer and then go over it with some sort or refinishing surface coat. I didn't really have anything that "showed" so I didn't get that far. But I'm sure West Marine and the other marine outlets will have something for that.

I've tried a few things on dull aluminum. Rupp's Alumiguard (primarily designed to keep outrigger poles bright) works well to brighten dull aluminum. It only lasts about a month however before it needs another treatment. If you want a longer lasting solution, or need to remove any chalking or stubborn corrosion, try brass wool soaked in Penetrol. Penetrol dries to form a clear protective coating over the metal. It works super on alternator housings, protects them against water splashes and corrosion.
