My first task this winter will be to remove Alosa's rudder. My first decision is whether it's practical for me to do it or whether I should have it done.
For Starters: Is it practical to do with the boat on jack stands or is a travel-lift necessary or just more convenient, if on jack stands must a hole be dug to get sufficient ground clearance for the shaft length, does/do the gudgeons have to be removed from the hull? ... and more to follow, I'm sure
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Seeking Advice on dropping CD-33 Rudder
Skip,
It sounds like a daunting task. I have to do the same task this winter, but unfortunately LaVida my CD33 is up on a trailer and the hole idea won't work.
What are your tasks/reason for dropping your rudder? I'm suspecting some water intrusion and am concerned about interior delamination.
I'll follow your progress and hopefully we can exchange ideas either here or directly by email.
Good Luck,
Mike

Skip, It's not that bad a job,We did so on our CD30 a couple of months ago.You will have to remove the lower rudder fitting and the prop.as well as the driveshaft. Our boat is on jackstands,As I recall a hole approx.3' deep was required to get the rudder and shaft clear(be careful not to undermine keel support)Also a good time to consider replacement of shaft log and cutlass bearing . It took two of us a couple of hours or so to get this done.Good luckSkip Medeiros wrote: My first task this winter will be to remove Alosa's rudder.
