I am considering the purchase of a CD30 with a Universal diesel, 14 HP....this seems like a small engine for a 10,000 lb. boat....any feedback on this? Will this engine move this boat well enough, and in general is it a good engine?? Thanks...

Re: CD 30 engine
Clay,
The Universal 18, 14 horsepower diesel is plenty of engine for the CD-30. I have it on Hanalei, and haven't had any problems(other than some problems with the shaft coupling, see below discussion). The advantage to it compared to the MD7A on other CD-30's is the straight drive. No "V" drive to contend with, and everything is basically accessible from the forward end of the engine.
Anyhow, it's an excellent vessel and the engine is just fine...you'll enjoy her!

Re: CD 30 engine
I asked the same question myself when we purchased our CD 30 just about a year ago. Having put our boat through its paces with the tricky and strong current of the Cape Cod canal I can assure you that the Universal 14 is more than capable for the boat. If you're in the New England area, the folks at Hansen Marine are great to deal with; friendly and knowledgable. Hansen offers 1 day seminars on basic diesel maintainence and repairs that are worth looking into. The CD 30 was a step up from our CD 26, and we don't regret making the move one bit. Good Luck!
