I've got the chance to purchase a 2hp short shaft for our Ty for a very good price. I know the long shaft is better but will the shorter one work? We're using an electric motor now would like a little more range if the wind dies. Any comments will be helpful. Thanks, Robert

Typhoon Short Shaft Outboard

unless you have a motor bracket that angles down toward the water surface rather than straight out from the back deck i think that short shaft motor will only thrash the surface for you.

Re: Typhoon Short Shaft Outboard
I have a 2.5 hp motor for my Typhoon. The wooden block on the outboard bracket was replaced by the previous owner with a wooden bracket shaped like a "v", which lowered the motor 3 or 4 inches closer to the water. I sit on the transom when motoring and the prop still breaks the surface when I go through waves. I also think the 2.5 is a little underpowered in windy conditions. It works best for just getting in and out of the slip area.Robert wrote: I've got the chance to purchase a 2hp short shaft for our Ty for a very good price. I concurr with the need for a longshaft outboard.
In my experience, 2HP should be plenty for the Typhoon, I use the 2.5HP Tohatsu/Nissen on mine, it has more than enough power, use the lowest pitch prop you can get for the motor.

This past season I bought a Honda 2HP long shaft for our Typhoon. It works perfectly. The boat had an 1968 short shaft Evinrude when we bought her five years ago, and the prop came out of the water when anyone with any heft went forward to work on the jib. I definitely recommend a long shaft. Bill Hammond
