Bronze Hull# plaque status

Post by Catherine Monaghan »

Bristol Bronze has the hull plate from our CD32. Roger has been puttering around with it to see what the options are for creating the new ones. The main issue is that Cape Dory used raised lettering on the original plate which means that Bristol Bronze will either have to sculpt new plates with raised lettering, based on the font used on our hull plate, for each and every model of Cape Dory ever built. This means making a whole slew of molds -- at least one for each model. The other option is to grind down the model number and create a single mold which will be used for all models. If this is done, the model number, as well as the hull number, will be stamped or etched into the plate. It is my impression that Roger is a perfectionist and whatever he decides, the final product will be top quality. At any rate, his current estimate for a new bronze hull plate is approximately $35. I'll keep you posted.

Catherine,

Thanks for the update. My preference would be for the raised lettering for the model number. Maybe Roger needs to set a minimum order or a set up price for each model so he isn't burdened with too many one-offs.

$35 sounds good to me.

Please keep me on the "keep posted list". Do we need to provide some up-front cash to start the project with raised letters?

Thanks for the update Catherine and all of your efforts. My vote is for the raised lettering even if it costs a little more, $35 is very reasonable. I hope if Bristol does any grinding it will be on a copy of your plaque and not your original! Looking forward to future progress reports and once again thanks for the effort.

Count me in for Two!!

Post by Bill Goldsmith »

One for my 27 and one for my recently acquired CD10. The plaque on my CD10 (Hull # 2335, 1989) is a thin flat brass rectangle (sheet metal) that has the info lightly etched. Oxidization has almost completely obscured the information on that plaque, and is very hard to read. My guess is that CD10 owners may be very interested in a plaque more akin to the larger CDs, even if it was not the original style. I know I would!

I would vote for the raised letter version. I think that it would be in keeping with the way we all feel about our boats...go First Class.
