Typhoon #74
I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I just bought typhoon hull 74 this weekend - thanks Joe! My girlfriend and I sailed it from Huron, OH to Rocky River, OH (40 nm E) in about 12 hrs. We went great for the first twenty miles under kite and then got one of those 180º windshifts that make you ponder a twenty mile beat with old sails and a dirty bottom. Needless to say, we beat for about ten and finished under main and iron genoa.
What a great way to get aquainted with a new boat (new to me anyway). Is it my engine (4hp Johsnson), or does the boat struggle without help from a main? I noticed at least a 2.5kt difference. I avidly race on an S2 7.9. It also has a 4hp OB and we get 5kts out of that engine easy. I know the Ty is high displacement but it's less than half the weight. Some insight on this would be much appreciated.
One final note: Having raced a lot, with eyed glued to the speedo, sailing a boat without one is bliss!

Good luck with you Typhoon. I have hull #34. To answer your questions, the speed of the boat is determined by waterline length. The Typhoon does not sail well to weather under headsail only. She will do better under main only, but only marginally. If you were trying to sail with jib only due to elevated wind speed, I suggest you get a set of reef points put in the main. That helped me out tremendously when the wind gets too much for a full main and working jib. As a racing man, you will get lots of pleasure learning to balance your Typhoon under various sail combinations. She handles like a much larger boat, but that's due to the full keel.

Re: Typhoon #74
Marino,
Congratulations on your new Typhoon.
I have a 4hp Johnson on mine, and it pushes the boat along at hull speed with less than half throttle, in calm conditions. It is less effective when plugging into a strong head-wind, because it doesn't take much of a chop to lift the prop out of the water.
Still, 40nm is a pretty good day's run for a Ty!
Regards,
Richard.

Re: Typhoon #74
Yeah, It was a little long at the end. But the boat sails really nice and is very comfortable. So far so good.
Is hull speed for the boat around 5kt? If so, I think I need to replace plugs, filters, etc. on the OB because I estimate that I'm getting about 3kt at half throttle and maybe 4 at full. It's a 1980 engine so I won't be running it hard for long periods of time but it seems that it could run better.

Thanks for the luck!
I haven't yet had it out in higher winds. It was blowing maybe 12 kt on the trip. I've heard so much about the seaworthiness of this boat that I look forward to seeing what she can do. Also, having heard so much, I wouldn't have opted to take a 40nm trip on an average 19' boat. Especially knowing what Lake Erie can do in a very short time!

Re: Typhoon #74
She will go 5.5 kts if you push her hard on a reach, but about 5 is a good speed under power. If your prop is designed for higher speeds, that could also account for the sluggish performance.Marino wrote: Is hull speed for the boat around 5kt?

Re: Typhoon #74
Thanks for that number. I know now that I need to get filters and new plugs. I've had some friends with engine experience look at it who came to the conclusion. I'm going to need to take small engine repair 101.

Congrats on your new boat. It is a fine boat and in excellent shape for its age. You got a screaming deal. I will miss having that red white and blue boat docked next to our 1981 typhoon 'Nirvana'. Glad to hear all went well on your maiden voyage. Good luck and good sailing. Let me know how it goes.Marino Curati wrote: I just wanted to say hello to everyone. Re: Typhoon #74
Thanks, I've sailed the boat several times so far and am very happy with it. I did have to tinker with the engine a bit but it's running great now. Actually it was nice to have Nirvana docked next door. I was able to compare the differences between the two and how the design changed over the years. I agree that for a old boat, knock on fiberglass, it doesn't leak at all and there are only a few very minor surface cracks in the deck.kmr wrote: Congrats on your new boat. Joe didn't alter anything on the deck and I think that's why it has stayed in tact. All I've done so far is change the cowl vent with a chrome solar Nicro. It just dropped in, way too easy. Hopefully that will help to keep the mildew under control.
I did notice your boat in the listing on this site and am going to add myself to the list shortly. Right now I'm in a slip in Rocky River and next year maybe Edgewater if I can swing it!
