Leaky shower head

Post by Mario »

We bought an '82 CD-30 in June and are slowly fixing alot of minor glitches. One such is a leaky handheld shower head. It never completely shuts off, so as long as the freshwater pump is running, it's dripping into the head sink, where we leave it sitting. It was a cheap plastic shower head of uncertain origin, so I thought that replacing it with a new shower head would do the trick.

No such luck--the new shower head (from West Marine) leaks even more out of the holes (not the connection) when the freshwater pump is on. Is this a matter of two faulty shower heads, or am I missing something here?

This isn't a serious problem, as we don't turn on the pump unless we need it, but it does mean that we're wasting water when we're using the galley sink.

Thanks--

Mario

Mario,

Where is the valve(s) to shut off the flow to the head? At the sink faucet? At the shower head? Both?

Older shower heads sometime have a switch on them. Some newer shower heads still have a valve (button or a rotating head) on them which does not completely shut off the water flow, but instead shunts it to a low volume flow. The reason is to prevent burst hoses if pressure is held on the lines for long periods of times (right, I don't believe that either, but after I bought one of these heads I called the manufacturer to ask why the switch doesn't shut the water off and got that explanation).

If you have a valve at the faucet and that leaks, then you could probably just rebuild the valve with new seals.

Anyway, try to find an older shower head with the valve at the head and make sure it shuts it off and doesn't allow a trickle (try some hardware stores...you should be able to find just a head for $10-$15). It's also a good idea to have another valve near the faucet if you don't have already have one.

The shut off for both shower heads is in the head itself. The old one used a pushbutton, and the new one has a rotating dial-type shut off.

The hose runs underneath the head sink inside a cabinet, and my inspection suggests it's pretty cramped to put a valve there, but maybe something on top of the sink.

Thanks!
