Re: kicking the tires
The boat is known as a Cal 40. It was a very popular boat in its day. Cal 40's won three straight TransPacs. I sailed on one in the 70's and it was a witch down wind. The digital knotmeter on the boat was calibrated in statute miles (Lake Michigan) and it topped out at 14.9. We had it nailed there one day under spinnaker until we broached big time. We then went to a full main and a jib wing and wing and did 12. Nice lines, well built. The Grey Marine was good in its day but its day is pretty much long past. Depending on price, condition and equipment you could have a real find. The one I sailed on had bronze opening ports. Below the water line it was the first to separate the keel and rudder. Different boat from a Cape Dory but they were sweet. Do your search under Cal not California and I'm sure you'll find some hits. I'd love to hear more about her.
