I'm seeking recommendations for 4-stroke outboard for CD-25

Post by JSS »

What make and model would be the best choice of 4-stroke outboard to add to a 1973 or 1975 CD25 ?

I know the size of the engine well limits your options. Exhaust through the prop would be nice as would ability to steer the engine in the well. (are there any suitable models with fresh water input for flushing the engine?) How many horsepower do I need to handle emergency situations? Is electric start very helpful?

There has been much dicussion on this board regarding outboard motors suitable for Cape Dory sailboats. It probably doesn't take much more than 2 or 3 horsepower for your CD25 to reach hull speed (approx 5 knots)in CALM water. Any additional power would be in reserve...I would recommend an 8hp Honda as a good choice in a 4 stroke...if you want electric start then 9.9hp would be the smallest in a 4 stroke. However, the 9.9 is a much heavier motor and too much power. I believe Nissan makes a 8hp electric start 2 stroke. I sail a CD26 with an electric start 9.9 Honda...I really like the conveience of electric start.

2-3 HP will not get hull speed. Hull speed is more like 6.2 knots. I think with a Sail Prop, 5 would be about minimal with the 9.9 being maximum. It depends on your needs. I would ignore any post claiming that there is a definitive answer to this question. But search around and you will find a wide range of opinions and experiences.

hull speed = 1.34 X square root of waterline length

Post by kurt »

1.34 X square root of 18' waterline = 5.68 knots
When I calculated the hp needed to achieve hull speed for a CD26 in calm water the answer was around 3hp...I have forgotten the math formula I used...maybe another reader knows the answer?

The waterline is almost always longer than 18'. By putting one 150lb person aboard the line goes to almost 19 feet. If you heel at all the line gets even longer.

Joe Focarile (CD26, Endure) has a Honda 4-stroke powering his CD26. He was part of our flotilla from NJ to the rendezvous on Niantic Bay and he beat all of the boats to their destination on each leg of our trip. For more info, contact Joe at:

Joseph.Focarile@worldnet.att.net

I'm sure he'll be more than willing to share any info that he has on that engine.
