Transom dimension & toerail question - Typhoon Weekender

Post by nlysiak »

Hi, I am the new owner of a 1976 Typhoon Weekender 19' and am so excited to get out on the water with this beautiful boat. Two questions for this group.
1) What is the rough dimensions of the transom? I forgot to measure and want to design a decal with the boat name.
2) The teak toerail has regularly spaced holes (they look original) and I'm wondering the purpose - is it for ties on a cabin cover or something like that? Should I fill these in, it seems like an opportunity for the teak to take in water and rot?

Thanks for reading! Nadine

Hi and congrats on your "new" boat! I too have a '76 Weekender and really enjoy it.

Sorry, I can't answer your question about the dimensions as I am away from my Ty. Regards the evenly-spaced holes, the factory installed a half-round aluminum trim piece to cover the seam where the transom fiberglass meets the teak. These often became missing in action (mine was half-gone when I got my boat). You can fill them and leave the seam as is. If you're feeling ambitious, you can mill a piece of teak to cover the seam, but it purely decorative.

Enjoy your Ty!

I think the holes in the toe rail that you're talking about are probably scuppers to let water drain off the deck. If you fill them in, any water that gets on the deck won't be able to get out. Needless to say, that wouldn't be great!
