We have a 1975 28' CD sail boat that is in need of re-powering. The present engine is the original Volvo mb 2, 25 HP. We are planing to repower with an 18 horse Yanmar diesel engine. The displacement of the hull is 9,000 lbs. We are writing to see if anyone has had experience in doing this. We are wondering if the 18 horse wood be adequate or if we need to go to the 27 HP engine. Would this require getting a new prop for the new engine? The present prop is the original 14". Any help or information would be appreciated. We need to make our decision in the next few days (today is 6/1/00).

I think you are going too high. We have a Pearson Triton (same designer but a better boat!). It's 28.6', 8500#s, beam about 8'. We used to have a 8 hp Nissan outboard on it which at 2/3rds throttle moved it along at hull speed in virtually all conditions we encountered. We got the diesel fever and put in a 10 hp Farrymann diesel (actually is closer to 8 hp I think). It does fine. If I were buying a new motor (the Farrymann was used and cost $1500), I'd go with the 1GM Yanmar. An efficient 9 hp diesel. Quiet. Parts are cheap (realtively). Mike

We have a 10 hp Farrymann in our 28.6' Pearson Triton. It's plenty. I think a Yanmar 1GM would be adequate for your 27 footer. Mike

My CD 28 has a Yanmar 3GM (27hp). It is more power than I need and the boat still won't back worth a darn. I would not go with less than the 15hp though. In fact, if I was repowering, I would choose the 2GM. Powering through tricky inlets with currents and interesting wave action makes one glad of a little extra power, but the 3GM uses more fuel, is heavier and bigger and harder to work around. I am happy with Yanmar. It seems to be reliable and fairly easy to maintain. Good luck. (Pearson Triton is probably a good lake boat when equipped with an outboard motor)

Our l979 CD 28 came with 13 horses of a Volvo MD7A engine (still finding sources in getting parts for it) which works great with our new three bladed prop in the currents of the San Juan Islands. At 1800 rpm, this boat travels around 5 knots-just enough for the orcas to play around with the boat.
I really don't think you need to go much higher in horsepower in your new engine. As one of the other writers stated, you will use more fuel, but probably not get much more out of it .
If I were to repower at this time, I would look at the ease of repairs and a good dealer that plans to stick around a few years that you can count on.
There are a lot of good engines out there-dealers????????????
