Everyone is very helpful. Thanks Jon, Don, Bill and Rich. Ed, I'm not sure what you're talking about but we are refering to matching eye leads on the deck not the cabin top. Maybe you know something I don't. I have a 1974 CD25 #147. There are neither jib fairleads nor any holes or marks where they formerly existed. I have only Genny tracks/cars. Has anyone had to mount eyes for the jib sheets? What did CD expect us to do? sail under genny only? I still love my 25.

Ryan,

I've only seen and been onboard a cd25 once. I did own a cd typhoon (now have cd30). on my typhoon there was a pair of eyeleads on top of deck as far outboard as possible and still be on top. I ran the jib sheets through these to keep the sheet trim inboard of the shrouds. on the genoa I used the spring blocks on the toe rail track. this arrangement made trimming the different sails a breeze (no pun intended). the cabin top eyes were also mounted on track to move for and aft. very short (2ft.) the toe rail track ran to stern cleats which allowed me to use them with the gennaker.. hope that helps. fair leads, ben

Ryan,

I don't think it will be tough to locate your jib eyes, but proper mounting of them is a major issue. If you put them on the deck, as mine are 3/4 of the way up the long window, I think you will be going through the cored part of the deck. Water intrusion here would be disastrous. You may want to drill your holes oversized, then reach in and scrape out as much coring as you can (try a Dremel tool). Refill these holes completely with epoxy. When this cures, drill through the epoxy with a smaller drill, and set your mounting bolts through these holes to your backing washers/nuts (or plates) that will sit above the shelf in the cabin. Put a good coat of bedding compound, like 3M's 101, under the eyes themselves for good measure (don't use 5200 - it is absolutely permanent and unforgiving). Also, be sure to get many opinions on this, as core drilling is not to be taken lightly.

Good Luck

Ryan,
I am very puzzled that there are no bullseye fairleads on your deck. Before installing new ones maybe someone on the board with a CD25 of similar year (1974) can assist. I can't imagine fairleads for the working jib not being installed at the factory. And...I can't imagine why someone would ever go to the trouble of removing them and filling in the holes. In any event, you might look inside the cabin under the aft port/windows above the shelves about 42 to 48" back from aft cabin wall/bulkhead (where fuse box is mounted)for evidence of where the fairleads mounting bolts might have come through the deck. If there, that will give you the location of originals (if they ever existed). I measured the location of my fairleads and they are 15" aft of the centerline of the aft lower shrouds on both sides and 7" from center of fairlead to inside edge of the toerails on starboard side and 7 1/2" on port side. This last measurement varies 7" on starboard and 7 1/2" on port because the deck is 1/2" wider on the port side (not critical and not unusual on boats- this non-symmetry). Viewed from on deck the fairleads are locationed on a narrow deck space between non-skid panels. Of course this MAY be useful to you IF my '77 and your'74 had similar deck lay outs. Another point- you may want to check fairlead location by hanking on the jib and measuring the imaginary line running from the mid-luff point on your jib's luff through the center of clew to where it strikes the deck. Doing this will give you(generally) the correct sheet angle for the jib. Lastly, if you do install new fairleads, Jon's advice is very important- do it right to avoid water infiltration in deck core. I would get all imput I could on this before drilling any holes in deck. Good luck. bill

I have a brand new (to me) 1975 CD25 "LUCILLE". There are no jib fairleads or any sign of them, just the genoa cars and tracks. I am new to sailing and have not even had a chance to sail my boat yet so I don't know if I am going to have a headsail trim problem or not. There are a couple of other 25's locally and I am going to check out their rigging. I will post my findings later this week.

cape dory must have offered a lot of options for sail trim hardware on its smaller boats. i've seen typhoons with only jib fairleads and a cleat, but mine (1976) has jib tracks with adjustable fairleads and cam cleats. i can't imagine trying to get proper trim on the working jib without a set of tracks with adjustable fairleads and cleats be it a ty, 22, 25 or on up. with just one fixed fairlead and a cleat the window for proper sail trim becomes extremely narrow. look for another cd with jib tracks or a similar boat and copy their setup unless you can get someone knowledgeable to help you establish a good location for your jib tracks.
happy sailing!
