I need to replace the main halyard (internal)on my ty weekender as mine broke in the middle of the mast. Does anyone know the correct diameter rope and type to use?. Also any suggestions on how to fish the line thru the mast greatly appreciated. Thanks

original equipment for the running rigging on typhoon weekenders in the 70's was 3/8" three-strand nylon. i used 5/16" low-stretch when i replaced my three-strand halyards. best way to run a new halyard is to drop the mast, run an electrician's fish down the mast, attach a light line (nylon twine) as a messenger, attach the new halyard to the messenger and pull the messenger/halyard throught the sheave in the top of the mast. to leave the mast standing would require going to the top, dropping sash chain down the mast and trying to get that out at the exit sheave. again attach a messenger and then the halyard.
this would take a lot more doing and aggravation compared to dropping the mast in my opinion.

good luck!

Jack,
I sure wouldn't use nylon for running rigging -- it stretches and you'll be hard pressed to tighten the luff in a blow. Use Sta-set or some other very low stretch dacron line. Nylon's only good for docklines and mooring lines where stretch is desirable.

i guess i skimped on my halyard description. "5/16 low-stretch braided dacron" from cordage maker of your choice. i don't know of anybody using anything but braided dacron or spectra for running rigging these days.
