Freshwater Pump Makes a Difference

Post by Bill Sonntag »

This is a follow-up to several posts a few weeks back about replacing/rebuilding and servicing freshwater (hot & cold running water) pumps on Cape Dories. My Cape Dory 31 was purchased with what I figured was the noisiest freshwater system pump I ever heard. It was noisy in every part of the boat if not several feet beyond. It was not original equipment but it appeared to be a fairly recent SureFlo pump. But holding my head up as a classic curmudgeonly Cape Dory owner is important to me - for four years I refused to replace it just because it was noisy - it worked fine after all!

Why I put up with all the annoyance over time is unclear to me! I just installed a ShurFlo Silencer pump and the difference is absolutely uncanny. The new pump makes so little sound that you can't hear over the sound of the water flowing into the sink! I did not change the location (under the head sink) I did not add sound insulation. The difference from the old is remarkable. This
may be single most effective upgrade I have done with the exception of a couple of new sails. I purchased the pump at a good price, lower than I normally see, $92. from Defender.
