1983 25d replaced water pump in2011, the two seals were included and I have stored with the original pump. Now the newer pump is dripping so I set about to replace the seals in he old pump, and just swap out pumps. Old pump shaft came out nicely, bearings good, but removing old seals , source of original drip was a chore
Large seal oil? Came out intact, smaller water seal came out in pieces.
Here is my question ; the new small seal fits loosely in the housing. Should it be snug in the old housing or held in place by shaft and pressure from the cirlip snap clip? U tube videos show tapping the small seal in place, then tapping the large seal in on top, but my small seal just slides around.
Larger seal on the bearing side fits nicely in housing but I’m concerned about the small water seal and it’s fit.
Plan is to remove 2011 water pump if still dripping and compare seals with the housing on old pump, I can’t believe the small seal housing is different between 1983 and 2011, but I would appreciate any advice from the board!

Re: 1gm water pump seal replacement
Follow up, after digging out most of the old hardened water seal (small) I can see a slight lip that the new water seal would fit in. Problem is removing last remaining rubber of original seal from the lip isn’t working.
Tried screwdriver, dental pick, wd40 To soften the old hardened seal remaining. Will try heat gun next.
Any other ideas?
