Battery charging

Post by Warren Kaplan »

My CD27 has the "standard" 2 bank battery set up. 2 batteries in the starboard cockpit locker hooked together and attached to the switch in the cabin. One of those "#1, #2 or both" selection switches. Batteries are getting a little low from long winter disuse. I have a portable battery charger that can be used as a trickle (2amp) charger. My question is: Can I just hook up the clips from the battery charger to the terminals on one battery at a time and charge each battery separately without disconnecting one from the other? In other words, all I want to do is open the plastic battery box, hook up the clips, and plug it in. No fuss, no bother. Then do the same for the other battery. Obviously, if that is taboo, I'll go to plan "B".
Thanks,
Warren

Yes. Have your switch set to off. The positive sides of the two batteries are then not connected to each other.

Warren - As Bob stated "yes". Alternatively, you can turn the battery switch to "Both" and hook the leads to only one set of terminals. The charge will flow to both batteries via the switch. In that case you only need to gain access to the one battery. The only problem with that dual charging set-up is you tend not to look at the condition of the terminals or water level (if acid filled).
