Head problems…

Post by Senorjacob »

I’m at a loss and need help. Just got back to the boat for the season and I’m having some plumbing problems.

When I pump the head I can draw in seawater no problem. Then I turn the valve to dry and pump it down but I feel a lot of pressure on the handle. I thought maybe I had a blocked vent line. So I used the manual pump out to flush water through and relieve the pressure but the pressure doesn’t seem to be in the HT. It seems like there’s something going on at the head. I can hear air bleeding off near the dry/flush valve after a single pump.

Here’s a link to a video I took for a friend of mine who’s helping me out. But I wanted to post it here to get some more thoughts.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my Johnson head. It was the flapper valve that was the issue. When I actuated the lever to the pump out position it didn't seem to actuate the same as it had before. I disassembled it and found the the flapper valve was jamed up with some kind of corrosion. After cleaning it up it has worked fine for several years.

I believe that is a Raritan PH-II head. Rebuild kits are available for about $65. It's not a fun job (no plumbing jobs are fun) but not that difficult. The web page below has diagrams that show how the different parts work which might be helpful to diagnose the problem.
