Discolored Cowl Vents

Post by Mike Davis »

I have two cowl vents on the stern that are very discolored but still good. Has anyone painted or made them look new again without replacing them? What do you suggest? Thanks.

I use Lacquer Thinner and Steel Wool to clean my Cowl Vents.

Works well - no sticky residue.

Acetone and a clean rag or paper towel works pretty well. Also use it on fenders, life lines, etc. which get a layer of sticky goo from the UV, tar, etc..

I have found that the mildew comes back pretty quick. Mine were pretty bad so we replaced. dee

There has been volumes written on this topic. I can’t remember exactly how how I did it. I cleaned them and painted them with spray paint made for plastic. Red inside and white on outside. They sell the paint at lowe’s. There are some articles on the internet about it.

That looks awesome! I was going to replace mine, but as soon as I bring her home from winter storage, this will be my first touch up!

Thanks for the great idea and picture!

All the best
