Standing Rigging

Post by casampson »

How does one know if the standing rigging needs to be replaced? I am pretty sure that the rigging on my 1975 CD 25 is original, judging by the closed turnbuckles, but all of the cables seem to be in excellent shape. If original, I am sure that prudence would dictate that I replace them all before sailing another season with them. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I just checked my records. During the winter of 2010 I replaced all my standing rigging. I bought the wire and Sta-Lok fittings and just duplicated the existing rigging. I had no indication that any previous owner had ever replaced any standing rigging other than one port lower shroud. It’s relatively easy and enjoyable. Measure twice, cut once...
Most Europeans replace their standing rigging every ten years as this is a stipulation in most insurance policies. I am not aware of an American equivalent requirement. I did it for my own peace of mind as I intended to head offshore.
It is possible to hire a rigger to inspect your standing rigging but I don’t believe they routinely employ a fluorescent dye penetrant, such as Magnaflux, to search for cracks. A purely visual inspection leaves much to be desired.
In your situation I would not hesitate to replace the standing rigging.
