How does one know if the standing rigging needs to be replaced? I am pretty sure that the rigging on my 1975 CD 25 is original, judging by the closed turnbuckles, but all of the cables seem to be in excellent shape. If original, I am sure that prudence would dictate that I replace them all before sailing another season with them. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Re: Standing Rigging
I just checked my records. During the winter of 2010 I replaced all my standing rigging. I bought the wire and Sta-Lok fittings and just duplicated the existing rigging. I had no indication that any previous owner had ever replaced any standing rigging other than one port lower shroud. It’s relatively easy and enjoyable. Measure twice, cut once...casampson wrote:How does one know if the standing rigging needs to be replaced? Most Europeans replace their standing rigging every ten years as this is a stipulation in most insurance policies. I am not aware of an American equivalent requirement. I did it for my own peace of mind as I intended to head offshore.
It is possible to hire a rigger to inspect your standing rigging but I don’t believe they routinely employ a fluorescent dye penetrant, such as Magnaflux, to search for cracks. A purely visual inspection leaves much to be desired.
In your situation I would not hesitate to replace the standing rigging.
