CD 36 and Beta Engines

Greetings CD ers:

A question to all CD 36 owners out there who re-powered their 36s from the venerable Perkins 4-108 to something different.
Specifically a Beta but I will entertain others brands.

Did you change the original engine bearers? Stick with or modify the original steel frame? Build whole new beds?

What engine did you choose? Gear ratio in the tranny?

How about horse power? Number of cylinders? Propeller?
Did you replace the shaft?

Though not at all similar to my situation, the excellent and extensive John Stones engine install post on his 36 started me thinking. It's time for a change here. What have others done"?

This CD36 is still for sale and has a Yanmar which the seller had professionally installed. Perhaps a PM would result in some specifics regarding the changeover.

We replaced our Perkins with a Beta 38 with TMC60A 7 degree down angle transmission new beds. The down angle makes working on the engine much easier. I did need to modify the engine cover a bit to clear the engine. I believe someone else was able to do it without modifying the cover.

I'm not sure what ratio it is. The old beds were cut out and new beds fabricated from G10, epoxy and glass. This is a picture of the new beds, they were later trimmed and modified a bit.

I believe I have Nautica sold (mixed emotions, no doubt ). That said, it is pending a survey on the buyer's boat that also just sold.

The previous owner had the engine replaced in 2003 by Deatons Marina in Oriental, NC. Here are the details that I found in the paperwork.

The motor is a 3JH3E, a 3 cyl 38 HP (@ 3650). It mates to a Kanzaki KM35 A transmission. The prop, shaft, bearings, dripless, etc were all replaced/installed at that time.

The engine bed was also replaced. It was done at the high end of the scale, using one ordered from Robinhood and modified a bit to fit the CD-36. It includes a fiberglass pan as well. Nice but not cheap.

Unfortunately I cannot find any details on the prop that was purchased.

I have never felt that the boat was under powered. It has always done well, and not resulted in black smoke at higher RPMs, higher loads. All in all everything seems to be properly matched, but not knowing what prop they put on her, this is lacking a pertinent detail. Sorry.
