Stern mounted outboard

Post by Senorjacob »

So I’ve just recently acquired a used 9.5’ AB RIB aluminum hull dinghy with a 9.8 Tohatsu 4-stroke outboard motor. It runs great and the dinghy tracks well. I’d like to be able to mount the motor on the big boat’s stern rail and I have a motor mount for it. But the Tohatsu is heavy and frankly I’m a little worried that in a moderately rough sea the weight of the outboard will rip off the stern rail completely. Is that a well-founded fear?

I’ve though off maybe bracing the stern rail with something like a Stanchion gate brace or something similar (https://www.mauriprosailing.com/us/product/SCH3609.html).

Thoughts?

Your outboard weighs 82 lbs. I don’t think you should be concerned. I wouldn’t expect your rail to collapse if I perched myself on it and I haven’t weighed 82 pounds since grammar school.
I have an Edson motor mount which attaches to the top and bottom rails to spread the load evenly on the stern rail. You may want to look into it’s suitability for your situation.
Here’s a pic.

It’s a Monitor. Great piece of gear.

Thanks, Jim. I’ve been looking at that motor mount. For now I have the $60 dollar one from west marine. Not the best but I’m trying it out.
