CD 27 Sea Hood

Post by Walter Hobbs »

A comment and a question.

I removed the sea hood today to clean under it and check the condition to the rails it is mounted on. After cleaning, I was pleased to see how nice and shiny the original unmolested gel coat is. No wear or UV damage. These boats sure must have looked wonderful when they came out of the molds in the 70s and 80s.

Next, would butyl tape be appropriate to reseal the sea hood or should I stick with something like 3M 4200? Looks like it was previously sealed multiple times with various chalking materials.

Thanks in advance. See some of you on the 18th.

Walter,
I used butyl tape on Slainte, our 27, seven years ago and it is still doing its job. Any old birds nests under yours  ?

I’ve always used Life-Caulk polysulfide caulk in that application because it is a regular, every five years or so, maintenance item and is fairly easy to remove without damage to the mating surfaces. I imagine butyl would also work well.

Thanks Tim and Jim for quick replies.

Tim, no birds nest but evidence of old wasps nests.
