Hello - Proud new owner of a CD27 with a YSM8 engine. I am about to start the winterizing process and have a question about the thermostat. So far I have never had a problem with overheating so I am assuming the therm. is working properly. I would like to get your opinion on how long the engine needs to run for me to be certain that the thermostat has fully opened before I let the anti-freeze run through. It never seems the thermostat housing ever gets really warm/hot even after running for 15-30 minutes. The raw water is still in the mid 60s where I am in CT. Does anyone recommend just taking the therm. out before starting the process? Also I am doing this all while the boat is still in the water before hauling. They don't want the engine run on the hard. Also a secondary question, what is the difference in a YSM-R and YSM-Y engine?
Thanks to all! - Have learned a lot from y'all already..Much appreciated...

For my CD27 with the same engine, I've done the following for two years in a row here in the Annapolis area:
- Start engine, put into idle
- Take down sails
- Shut off engine
- Eat a sandwich(to give time for the oil to end up back in the resevoir)
- Change oil
- Hook up plastic tube to water intake
- Fill bucket with the pink stuff
- Turn on engine
- After 3-4 gallons has been sucked out of the bucket, shut off engine.
- Have a beer
Taking my time, this takes maybe 2 hrs, and a good chunk of that is just fiddling with tubing. I should get a T valve and save myself the time. I make sure the bilge is shop vac'd dry,the holding tank is empty, and I toss some pink stuff into both just to be sure.

It's always the little details that trip you up. I just take the whole experience as a chance to reflect on the past season. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change fuel filters while already in there assuming you know how to bleed the lines(it's something I haven't quite gotten down). That way in the spring, fire it up, hank on the sails and it's go time.
