Coaming cleat upgrade

Post by Walter Hobbs »

My early CD 27 has cleats for the jib sheets on the outboard side of the cockpit coaming. I have seen the coaming cleats that extend above the coaming and are available from Spartan. My question is for those of you that have the later cleats. They look like they would be easier to use but do you end up snagging gear or yourself on the protruding cleat? Would like input before I switch.

thanks

My CD22 has the cleats mounted on the top edge of the coamings. While not a significant problem for me, I have snagged clothing on them. Also, I wonder if, with age and poor maintenance, they might not be prone to being pulled out. I have thought about relocating them to the outside of the coamings and decided that they would not be as accessible and therefore might create a new set of problems for me. I think it comes down to personal preference.

I've had no issue with snagging on my cleats, which extend above the coamings. I'm not sure I'd like working a cleat I couldn't see, on the leeward side of the boat, especially one that's not made off, just turns taken.

Beware that your uninitiated friends dont' use them to secure dock lines. They won't be there in the morning.

Thanks for the replies. Neil, that is the main gripe, you can't see the cleats easily when tacking and inconvenient to make the sheet fast.
