All,
Like many of you, I've been using butyl rubber for years to bed deck fittings and have been buying it from RV centers and online.
It recently occurred to me that one of the sealants I've used for years in residential and commercial electrical work must have been butyl rubber. This material is known as "duct seal" and a quick look at the SDS confirmed that it is a butyl rubber compound. Its readily available at Home Depot, Lowes and anyplace else that sells electrical equipment. It's sold in one pound bricks (approx. 8" X 2" X 1"); cost at Lowes was $3.18 per brick this morning.
Here's a link to product description - https://www.lowes.com/pd/Gardner-Bender ... al/4595233
I've also used duct seal on numerous occasions during boat renovations to temporarily seal screw holes and larger opening (covered opening with plastic or wooden boards with duct seal around perimeter) when things can't be permanently sealed or finished until the next day or weekend of good weather. In one case, I used it to seal the mast pass through in the deck for an entire winter. Its peals off well and does not seem to leave much of a film that cannot be addressed with normal cleaners/solvents on hand.
take care,

Re: source for Butyl Rubber
I got butyl rubber from the guy at Compass Marine. His site has a wealth of information.
