What are my options for CD Typhoon trailers?

Post by PortTack »

Hello,

Recently feel head over heels in love with the CD Typhoon Weekenders, and have been looking into buying one. I'm in New England and am happy to travel and/or sail a boat I buy back to CT where I live, but I'm trying to figure out what my trailer options are, as several of the boats I've found listed don't seem to come with trailers. I know of Triad trailers and have priced those out new, but are there other similar non-triad options that I just don't know of? What do other people use for trailering? Is there a known market for used boat trailers that I just haven't found?

I think I've convinced my wife that swapping out our 17' O'Day Daysailer with a CD Typhoon is the right choice, but storing it in the off-season in our yard and working on it here is a big factor, so we don't have to pay winter storage fees at a yard.

Alan Stewart - a member here - seems to have a continual source of used trailers for Cape Dorys. I'd contact him to see what he has or knows of. Good luck on your search! Typhoons are great boats.

Another option would be to build a cradle and mount it on a flat bed trailer. You could not self launch but if you had other uses for the trailer, it might be a bargain. Much easier to find than a dedicated boat trailer.

Thanks! I'll send Alan a note. I'd like something sturdy enough that it can make the trip from MA or RI to CT once, and then the 5 mile loop from my house to the yacht club. Our club has a crane and saddles, so I don't necessarily need to be able to launch the boat from the trailer at a ramp.

Hello Phillip, I responded to your email but am not sure that it reached you. I am currently putting together several Typhoon trailers for owners in New England, (one is aluminum and the other galvanized steel), I’ll be happy to chat with you about options for a Typhoon trailer - sounds like all you really need is a basic “over-the-road” version w/o tongue extension or other add-ons...
Feel free to give me a call most anytime @ 843-450-2498. Cheers!

Northlander Sawmills and Trailers in Machias, ME built a trailer for my Typhoon for about $1500. It does what I need it to do, which is get Dolcetto from my house to her mooring and back (about 1.5 miles each way) and store her over the winter. I can provide more details if you're interested.

Machias, ME! My grandparents had a house up on Gardner Lake when I was a kid, spent almost every summer Down East! I'll look into it, thanks!

Alan, I got your email, I appreciate it. We went to see a Typhoon the other day that was trailerless, but it was in much worse shape than we thought, so still hunting.

I had Alan Stewart build me a very nice poppet trailer from an older Cox galvanized power boat trailer for my typhoon. He is in Florence, SC. and will pretty much build what you want to fill your needs. He is easy to work with great attention to the little details. He will deliver and his prices are very resonable. Before my typhoon, I also had an O'Day Daysailer I. Both are great little sailboats. Tom Adams
