What's The preferred battery for a Cape Dory Weekender?

Post by Vt Sailor »

I bought a Cape Dory Weekender in August 2017 and did some basic daysailing on Lake Champlain. I've been refinishing her and putting in new instruments and I just found that there is a wooden battery box between the head and the anchor compartment. Inside dimensions are 10.5" x 5.5" .

Can someone give me a recommendation for a deep cycle battery and where I can purchase? There no engine on the Weekender so I don't need a starting battery - just something to run the lights snd instruments.

Thanks in Advance!

I don't know the dimensions of the battery but I would get a basic deep cycle battery and a solar trickle charger if I were just running LED lights and an instrument or two. I would think a $50 35 amp hour battery would be more than adequate unless you are doing long trips. I am a lead acid man but others really like AGM. I would just make sure your charging system matches the type of battery as they charge at different voltages/schedules.
