CD 26 Mast Lighting Repair

I am troubleshooting my mast steaming and deck light that are not working. The original light housing is screwed into the mast and I'm having a devil of a time getting it off so I can survey the wiring. Has anyone else replaced the original mast lighting? Any tips, tricks, or lessons learned?
