best jib sail?

Post by ScoutCD25 »

i am planning to get a pro furl c290 roller furler for my CD25. Have not had a roller furler before; I have been using 2 hanked jibs for 15 years, they're getting worn out. I could really use advice on type of sail to get for the new roller-furler. I sail all summer in Eggemoggin Reach, Blue Hill Bay, Penobscot Bay. Most singlehanded. I try not to go out when it's blowing white horses in the Reach but ya never know. Generally day sails with maybe 12 knots.

A 135% is about as big as I would recommend. Get a padded luff and you can furl it in heavy air but still have decent shape. KAYLA is the 1st with roller-furling for me. I had 110% and 150% hank-ons for my CD25.
I'd also like to give Precision Sails a plug - they were absolutely amazing with the customer service I received!!!

just had a 135 with a padded luff made by Hyde Sails Direct and while I have not used it yet, it sure looks nice. They also sell CDI furler systems, although I went with an Alado from brazil.. bomb proof....

I agree with the comments about not going larger than a 135% sail, but I suggest that you check out the possibility of buying a good quality, used sail. You could end up saving a lot of money. Bacon Sails and Marine Supplies in Annapolis probably has the largest inventory, which you can search on their website at baconsails.com. Other companies that you can check are secondwindsails.com, atlanticsailtraders.com, minneysyachtsurplus.com and pineapplesails.com. Make sure that you get a sail with #6 luff tape.
