Stays’l Modifications

Post by John Stone »

Recently, we installed a very simply and easy to make stays’l forestay release system on the Far Reach. It is built around a heat treated dyneema (Dynex Dux) 9mm synthetic forestay, a dyneema (Amsteel Blue) lanyard, and three low friction rings. An additional modification was to remove the brass piston hanks on the stays’l and replace them with 3/4” brass luff rings. We believe this will reduce friction when hoisting/dropping the stays’l and when the jib crosses over the staysail hanks when tacking.

These two mods were easy to make and relatively inexpensive (a Schaefer SL 500 release lever cost $550-$750 depending on where you purchase it).

You can read about the details of this modification and see more photos by reading the full post on our website.
