How many dorades on a CD 31

Post by Capt Hook »

Mine only has one.
There's a listing on sailboatlistings.com for a CD31 and pic shows two
Dorades. Was that an option?
How hard would it be to add one?

One was standard. Retrofitting one would be reletivley easy once you decided which type suited you. You can go the simple route with a Vetus dorade box or purchase/fabricate a teak dorade box similar to the original. If you remove the lexan cover on your original dorade box you can see how CD fabricated and installed it.

Dorade are a wonderful way to increase ventilation on your boat. Building a dorade box is not difficult. Boxes made of teak are much better looking, and better performing, than the cheap manufactured plastic ones. I built one from scrap teak and installed it on the fantail of the Far Reach. This winter I plan to build and replace both the originals teak dorades on the cabin top.

Olin and Rod Stephens are generally credited with designing the original dorade boxes we have come to know and love. If I am not mistaken they were first used on Olin's famous yawl Dorade. I used their drawings, which you can find on the internet, as the template and modified the top to incorporate end grain pieces to eliminate the edge grain on the top lid.
