I am in the process of installing a furler for my 31's staysail. A friend is suggesting I won' t need the self-tending boom for this operation. There are articles on the subject but I wonder if it wouldn't require several more pieces of hardware, etc. Any thoughts? If you have a cutter rig with furlers, how is yours set up?

I installed a Harken ESP roller furling unit myself in March of 2016. I wish I had done it sooner. The staysail is certainly used much more frequently and to good advantage. I have found that a reefed staysail and a double reefed main are a very comfortable combination when the offshore weather warrants it.
I have retained my staysail boom and I'm happy with it so far. I appreciate the fact that with a main and staysail set the rig is self tending....no need to attend to sheets when maneuvering in tight places. To remove the boom is simple and you might just be able to install a couple lead blocks to lead the sheets aft for trimming. You could use the existing staysail sheet winch on the port side but you'd have to add one on the starboard side.
The wifi here is very poor at the moment, it was out since Saturday evening. I tried to upload a photo but it just won't load. I can try to add a photo later if my connection improves.

I assume you are asking whether or not the boom has to be in place to install and/or use the furler? If this is the case, my presumption would be no. If you zoom in, you can see from this photo of my rig that the hardware for the staysail stay is quite separate and apart from the hardware for the boom..A friend is suggesting I won' t need the self-tending boom for this operation

We install roller furling on our inner forestay and kept and continue to use the staysail boom so the staysail remains self tacking.

After you guys installed the staysail furler did you notice any more trouble in light wind of getting the jib over in a tack? As we all know in light air sometime the jib gets caught. of course no problem in normal sailing but I would think the furler would take up more space and reduce the space for the jib to move over.
I have just put a new dutch system main sail on and will be putting on a new stay sail this fall. my current staysail is hank on of course and it never occurred to me to use a furler until I saw this post. I do have a furler on the yankee. I also have a CD31.
