seeking advice on sailing/drydock storage between charleston

Post by nick friedman »

hi. I recently made a major lifestyle change and moved from Florida to the mountains of western North Carolina. Though I love the mountains, I'm faced with the dilema of what to do with my Typhoon. I could greatly simplify my life by selling it off, but after ten years of ownership, I just don't have the heart to part with it. Recently, I've gotten hot on the idea of finding a place to keep it on the coast somewhere between Charleston and Savannah during the winter months(a mere five hour drive from our home). The boat is on a trailer and I'd be looking for a yard with a deep water ramp. I'm not very familiar with the region and so am seeking any information with regards to marina storage and sailing conditions. In terms of the sailing conditions, where would be the most desireable area to keep the boat? Ideally I would be looking for a spot which enjoys protected sailing such as around Hilton Head and would not cost me an arm and a leg. I would be using the boat for full weekends and would like to have the option of camping at State/national parks along the water. Any help in my search would be greatly appreciated. If you think I'm nuts, let me hear about it.

Thanks alot,

Have sailed both extensively. Sail Harbor, Wilmington Island, sail on Wassau Sound, near Savannah.call Dick Long. Charleston not the best for small boat sailing. Don't know what driving time is but I would pick Belhaven, N.C. and sail the Pungo River, Pamlico Sound, Albamarl Sound, Ocracoke. Call Axson Smith at the River Forest 252 943 2151. Use my name either place. Also consider Oriental, N.C. Deaton Yacht Service, Bob Deaton. You will find N.C. the least expensive and the better sailing. There is a brand new ramp in Belhaven.

Rob.
Congratulations on NOT selling your boat. Enjoyment (real enjoyment) has a cost that is worth weight in personal gold. I"m from the great lakes and my wife from the California coast. we met/lived in Atlanta for 9 years. 4-5 hours of drive time to the ocean is worth it. Try Tidewater marina in Savannah. It's a real working marina. We've been reoutfitting my father-in-law's 37 there for the last 2 1/2 years and he's just about to launch/retire/cruise/makeusalljealous...

Any other info about that area, I can try to put you in touch with people who know more than I do, just ask.
