Entering the Gulf Stream

Post by John Stone »

I ran across this photo today. Taken last May. About 100 NM off the coast of NC. Headed home after single handing back from St Marrten. I think we were just entering the east wall of the Gulf Stream. The wx had been very unstable with light winds the night before and all morning but had begun to pick up. The seas were still fairly flat. All plain sail set--jib, stays'l, main. We were tearing along making almost 8 knots. The center of TS Bonnie was to the west. We were both headed to Cape Lookout.

Beautiful photo John. What was used to take the pic, a GoPro? I never get a picture of myself because I'm the one taking the picture.

Thank. Yes, I shot it with a GoPro, a gift from one of my sisters. It's an amazing camera. Anyway, I strap it to a boat hook and then lash that to wherever I need it to be, usually to a stanchion on the stern. I mostly shoot video. Later, I can go back and capture a single frame from the video.

While I learned film photography on a 35mm SLR (does anyone else miss he pleasure of shooting pictures with film?) it's hard to beat the convienence of digital.

Very nice picture indeed. It visually supports the story line with the storm center west of you providing a fast reach, and the 3 knot kick from behind provided by the stream. I am sure there were other thoughts about competing with the storm for racing to the common goal. All ended well, as did the great stories you have shared with us. Thank you.
On an aside, I too enjoyed many years of shooting film with my Canon F1 and RB 67, which are retired to a display cabinet. I occasionally remember the smell of processing B&W film and papers, and Cibachrome prints on long nights in the darkroom, while I am now sitting at the computer Photoshoping my digital photography. It was fun back then, now it is easier and healthier to arrive at good results. There are many parallels between that and the hardware changes in sailing. My hat is off to you for the way you are enjoying your beautiful boat, in a simpler, classic manner.
Fair winds!
