My guess is Lebanon, Kansas, the geographic center of the contiguous states.

Re: September in South Florida
Jim, my friend, Kansas has one of the highest incidences of tornadoes in the contiguous US. As I recall, the most fearsome tornado of all (the one in The Wizard of Oz) formed in Kansas.
From hurricanes to tornadoes I don't think so.

Re: September in South Florida
welllll... considering the wind speeds I've seen logged for tornadoes, I'd much rather real with 'cane, except for those creepy, crawly ones like Ivan back in '04. But even still, lots less damage over a longer period of time than a tornado can cause in an instant!

I would guess that the State of Washington might be the safest place, as far as sea temperatures are concerned. You will want to keep your distance from the volcanoes though.
I imagine that David Patterson could weigh in on this.

You definitely don't want to move to Washington. It rains all of the time, is always cold, the sun never shines, the water is freezing, if you're not killed by a volcanic eruption the huge earthquake and tsunami will get you, the anchorages are way too crowded, the traffic is horrendous, there is never any wind, the Mariners are terrible, and I'm sure there are many other reasons to stay away from this terrible region of the continent.

Minnesota guys. Minnesota. Cold keeps (most of) the bad weather out.

Tom, you sound a lot like me in Dec/Jan/Feb when relatives and friends in Mass. ask about visiting for "just a few days". The calls usually start right after the first heavy snowfall. I remind them of all the reasons why they should NOT visit Miami. It's surprisingly cold, windy, it gets dark much earlier than up north, people are not friendly, etc. My words of caution usually have little impact.Tom Keevil wrote:You definitely don't want to move to Washington. The Great State of Maine, of course! The Gulf Stream moves off shore well south of us and takes all that nastiness from Florida and the Gulf States with it. Global warming is gonna bring us up to winter temps compatible with human life. Terrific coast for cruising. Lobster at $4/lb . Streets are paved with gold and Dark and Stormy's run out of the kitchen tap! ... only downside is the f%$! governor!!... and summer folk from "away" (read, Boston and NYC).

I just love to read how Dave Morton, Roberto and Tom, et al interject a not too hidden subliminal message into their posts to deter sailors from moving into their home waters. LOL
