Grappling Hook

Grappling Hook
Need one to locate my mooring, which has gone missing for the second year in a row. Tried all of the usual places but could not locate one. Any suggestions?
Re: Grappling Hook
A friend of mine suggested I try the harbormaster. An excellent suggestion which I will try.

Thinking "outside the box" what about hiring a diver to locate your mooring Assuming you have a reasonable idea of where it should be a diver can, assuming he does not locate it immediately upon decent, do a circular search pattern from a fixed point and probably find your mooring without too much effort. Paying a diver should not be much more than buying a new grappling hook and, as a bonus, at the same time he can check the mooring, chain, bottom shackles, etc.
I would volunteer but I live in Miami and I no longer do cold water dives, I am a proud charter and life member of the CAWWD Club.

Re: Grappling Hook
Never having needed to ask, is it true that you can get a diver to search around for less than a grappling hook? $40??

Maybe in warm wateris it true that you can get a diver to search around for less than a grappling hook? $40??
I believe we paid about $80 to get a chunk of heavy duty black plastic tarp unwrapped from our prop a few years ago.
Now I am certified (but CAWWD also).

Re: Grappling Hook
From my perspective it depends on the job, conditions, etc.grluecke wrote:Never having needed to ask, is it true that you can get a diver to search around for less than a grappling hook? $40??
Divers usually get about $70-$80/hr to clean boat bottoms in South Florida. Most actually charge by LOA of the sailboat but it comes out to about that hourly rate.
In looking for a "missing" mooring in warm South Florida waters I would guess the hourly fee would be about $70-$80/hr (with a one hour minimum, etc.) and should not take very long to find, assuming the boater knows the general area.
I have searched for a few items over the years. It is sometimes amazing how off some people are in terms of location. "I am sure it went right over the side right here". Two (2) hours and an empty SCUBA tank later the object is found 40 yards from the "sure spot". "Gee, it must have been the currents". Not a lot of currents in a heavily protected mooring field.
By the way, given the same search for a mooring in New England waters I personally would charge $300-$400/hr. I think this would discourage most from hiring me and then the boater in search of a diver can find some young 20s kid who does not yet appreciate the pleasures of warm water and has never heard of the CAWWD Club.

Re: Grappling Hook
How did the mooring go missing in the first place ? Normally a small float is attached with a line to the chain when the chain is dropped to the bottom when the ball and pennant is removed for be winter.
Better to find humility before humility finds you.
Re: Grappling Hook
I put a six-foot 4 x 4 winter stick on my mooring last fall. The stick has disappeared, nowhere to be seen. My theory is that it either became waterlogged and sank, or ice drove it into the mud. I do have a GPS location that I can use, but haven't yet because, well, I don't have a GPS. My winter stick was stuck in the mud last year, and I had to hire a diver (for $150, I think) to yank it out.
Re: Grappling Hook
A lot of boaters are using "celery sticks" instead of wood winter logs.
They are made of some kind of plastic and stand straight up so they have less chance of getting caught in someone's prop!
I doubt Marion Harbor had any significant ice last winter maybe you did not have enough scope out during a high time and someone's prop cut the line
Hope you find your mooring Marion is a beautiful Harbor
