Cape Dory 28 Adding Bridge Deck

I'm in the process of buying a 1977 CD 28 and I was curious if anyone has added a bridge deck to an older CD that didn't have one. I mean a permanent quality modification involving moving the drains and re-configuring the companionway. Also has anyone beefed up the companionway drop boards with stainless angle or something to make them more bombproof? Or is just adding some latches or down hauling straps adequate.
