In praise of this board and my beloved Boston Red Sox

Post by Sea Hunt Video »

Over the past years I have found (as have many others) that this board continues to be a wealth of education, recommendations, "how to"s for all kinds of questions related to our Cape Dory sailboats. Just alone in the past few weeks we (I) have learned much about small O/Bs (including Torquedo electrics), loose footed versus fixed mainsails, the history and changes at Robinhood Marine and the issues related to modifying a cockpit sole for engine access and/or better drainage.

I spent the day doing maintenance chores on S/V Bali Ha'i including cleaning the largely inaccessible galley sink ( ), applying McLube to the mainsail track, cleaning the raw water filter, running the engine to charge the batteries, marking the main halyard for first and second reef points.

Sadly, given my distance from Boston and the lack of local coverage I was unable to watch or listen to the Boston Red Sox DEFEAT the Cleveland Indians in their opening day game in Cleveland. I am pleased to report that my beloved Red Sox are on the march yet again to another World Series Championship in October 2016.

GO BOSTON RED SOX :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :D :D :D

Roberto,
I too am a Red Sox fan down in New Orleans.
I became a Sox fan when my son was at BC and Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra (fellow Ga Tech alums) played for the Sox.
Last year I got the mlb.com ap. Now I can listen to all the Sox games on my iPhone or iPad. In fact I can listen to any MLB game. I think I can go into the archives and listen to games from a few years ago when they were doing better. I think it was $19.95 per year with a 35% discount for vets. You can hear the Sox announcer or the other team and can listen in Spanish. Even when they play the yanks on Sunday night baseball I mute the TV and listen online. More nostalgic, often don't even look at the TV.

Roberto,
I don't want to hijack your post, but I thought you had Tidesmarine Strongtrack. Do you still use McLube on the Strongtrack? I am ready to make the plunge, I just want to get users advice.

PS. Our Beloved Cardinals are still waiting for a rematch.

Tim:

I do have the Tidesmarine Strongtrack. You have an excellent memory for detail.

I did apply McLube today. I also applied it to the "slugs" (technical term :?: ). The mainsheet was not going up or down as easily as I would like, nor as easily as I remember from months ago. It is also possible that the blocks at the top of the mast are not functioning optimally and that this is causing some or all of the "slowness" issue. Of course the mainsail is "almost new" and still stiff. This probably adds a little to the "slowness" factor when the mainsail is being lowered.

I hope to have a rigger go up to check the blocks later this month. So far, the one rigger I called said it was a "two hour" ($150) job to do this. 50 lbs. lighter and 30 years ago I would have climbed the mast myself in less than 10 minutes. Alas, pasta, sausage and Chianti have taken their toll on this once athletic soul. :( :D

Timothy:

I do not appreciate this thread being "hijacked" with talk of the St. Louis Cardinals. Please limit your posts to Cape Dory sailboats or the Boston Red Sox. :D  :D

Thank you.

it was a good day for the beantown team yesterday....
if only they would give Jerry Remy a congenial partner instead of that hump Dave OBrian, I miss Orsillo already.
I've had enough of Castiglione as well.

Roberto,

It's a well known, scientific fact, that the performance of any sports team can be improved by sending a modest gift, in the form of single malt scotch, to a friend living within walking distance of the team's home ball park. Just saying.

Joe, but as I said, outcome depends on the single malt... Although perhaps that's the perceived outcome.

There's a reason I don't consider single malt an aid to navigation!
