Loss of power when shifting in reverse

Post by Mike Davis »

At the end of last season, I noticed that whenever I shifted the transmission in reverse, and gave the engine some increased throttle, the engine lacked power and sometimes died. This happens only in reverse. Has anyone ever encountered such a problem and what is the solution. Thank again.

Do you have the single lever control or the two lever?

Check the linkage. Put the lever into reverse and see if you can advance the throttle at the engine. I think the linkage is loose and needs adjustment. Do you have the manual for it?

I agree with Tim. I found that a key piece of my one-lever shift linkage had rusted badly. The linkage froze, and in forcing the cable it busted. I could still run the engine in forward, but no reverse.

This year I cleaned it with Naval Jelly, wire-brushed it and painted it with Rustoleum. Will see how it works out.
